Both wax melts and candles fill your home with beautiful fragrance, but they work differently and suit different lifestyles. Here’s an honest comparison to help you choose — or decide you want both.

How Each One Works

Candles use a wick and an open flame to slowly melt the wax pool, releasing fragrance into the room as the wax burns. The scent builds gradually over the first burn as the wax pool widens.

Wax melts are flameless. Small scented wax cubes or clamshells are placed in a warmer — either an electric model or one heated by a tealight — and gently melted. No wick, no flame, no combustion. The wax doesn’t evaporate; it just releases its fragrance until the scent is spent, then you discard or replenish it.

Safety

Candles: Require an open flame. Must never be left unattended, should be kept away from children and pets, and need a stable surface away from drafts. See our candle safety guide for full guidelines.

Wax melts (electric): Completely flameless and can be left running safely. Many electric warmers have built-in timers or auto shut-off. Far safer in homes with children, pets, or for use in bedrooms overnight. See our range of electric wax warmers.

Scent Throw

Candles: The scent builds gradually with a warm, rich character as the wax pool develops. Most noticeable in the room where the candle is burning.

Wax melts: Often produce a stronger and faster initial scent throw because the fragrance isn’t being consumed by combustion. Great for quickly scenting a room before guests arrive.

Ambiance

Candles: The flickering flame creates a warm, cosy visual atmosphere that wax melts simply can’t replicate. Candles are part of the mood, not just the scent.

Wax melts: Purely functional for fragrance. No visual element. Better suited to bathrooms, kitchens, or spaces where ambiance matters less than the scent itself.

Cost & Longevity

Candles: The wax is consumed during burning, so each candle has a finite life. Smelty’s 170g soy candle gives approximately 40–50 hours of burn time.

Wax melts: Very cost-effective once you have a warmer. Each melt can fragrance a room for several hours, and you can mix and match scents freely.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose a candle if you want atmosphere and ambiance alongside fragrance — think an evening bath, a dinner table, a cosy reading nook.

Choose wax melts if safety is a priority (pets, kids, overnight use), you want flexibility to mix scents, or you want a stronger room fragrance quickly.

Many people use both. Candles for evenings when you’re present to enjoy them. Wax melts for daytime, bathrooms, or bedrooms.
