If you’ve ever wondered why some candles are described as “clean burning” while others leave black marks on your walls, the answer almost always comes down to one thing: the wax. The choice between soy wax and paraffin wax affects everything from air quality in your home to how long your candle lasts and what it does to the environment.

What Is Paraffin Wax?

Paraffin wax is a by-product of petroleum refining — the same industry that produces petrol and diesel. It’s been used in candles for over 150 years because it’s cheap and widely available. The problem is that when burned, paraffin releases trace amounts of toluene, benzene, and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. While a single candle won’t create meaningful health risks, frequent use of paraffin candles in poorly ventilated spaces can affect indoor air quality over time. Paraffin also tends to produce more black soot, which collects on walls, ceilings, and inside your nostrils.

What Is Soy Wax?

Soy wax is made from hydrogenated soybean oil — a 100% natural, plant-based and renewable resource. It was developed in the 1990s as a cleaner alternative to paraffin and has become the preferred wax for artisan and health-conscious candle makers worldwide. All Smelty candles are made with 100% natural soy wax, poured in small batches in our Sydney studio.

Soy Wax vs Paraffin: A Direct Comparison

Burn Cleanliness
Soy wax burns at a lower temperature and produces minimal soot. Paraffin releases more black carbon soot, which can mark walls and contribute to indoor air pollution.

Burn Time
Soy wax burns approximately 25–50% longer than paraffin for the same weight of candle. A 170g soy candle from Smelty burns for approximately 40–50 hours.

Scent Throw
Soy wax holds fragrance oil exceptionally well and releases scent gradually as it melts. This means a more even, consistent scent experience rather than a strong initial hit that fades quickly.

Environmental Impact
Soy is a renewable crop and soy wax is biodegradable. Paraffin is a fossil fuel by-product and is not biodegradable.

Vegan & Cruelty-Free
Soy wax is 100% plant-based and vegan. Paraffin is petroleum-derived (not animal products, but not renewable). Beeswax candles, while natural, are not vegan.

Clean-Up
Spilled soy wax cleans up easily with soap and warm water. Paraffin spills require solvents or heat to remove fully.

Why Smelty Chooses Soy Wax

At Smelty, we use 100% natural soy wax in every candle we make. Not because it’s trendy, but because we believe you shouldn’t have to compromise on what you bring into your home. Our candles are made in small batches in Castle Cove, Sydney, with cotton wicks (no lead or zinc) and phthalate-free fragrance oils. You can check the ingredients of every product we make — there are no hidden additives.
